Coffee and Twenty Minutes

The kitchen was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator and the soft tap of rain against the window. David stood by the counter, watching Paul gather his things near the door. The single potted herb plant on the sill caught the morning light, casting a small green shadow across the white tiles. He wanted to say something that would make Paul pause without sounding like he was holding him back.

David stepped forward and gently offered, 'Just twenty minutes. I’ll make it quick; you can watch me try not to burn the beans.' Paul smiled, the worry in his eyes softening as he set his bag down. He moved closer and rested a hand on David’s forearm, feeling the warmth of skin against skin. 'Twenty minutes sounds like exactly what I needed,' he said.

They stood together at the counter while coffee began to brew between them. The shared quiet dissolved Paul’s anxiety; for the first time all morning, he felt seen and wanted instead of rushed or guilty. David reached out and tucked a stray lock of hair behind Paul’s ear. Neither spoke about what had changed, but both knew that something small and real had quietly shifted.
