Coffee in the Barracks Kitchen

The kitchen smelled of steel and old coffee. Andrew wiped his hands on a towel and glanced toward Justin, who was still buttoning his shirt near the door after training. He wanted to say something that wasn’t an order or a reminder about evening roll call. Instead he held up two mugs and said softly, “I’ll make it quick—black or with cream? I promise not to talk like a drill sergeant.”

Justin hesitated, then smiled in the way people do when they’re afraid of being too obvious. “Cream,” he said. When Andrew reached for his mug, their fingers brushed and lingered just long enough to feel intentional. The small contact settled something between them; the air grew warmer without anyone saying it out loud.

Andrew kissed Justin on the cheek as he left, a simple gesture that felt like permission. Justin watched him go, already smiling at how ordinary and perfect this moment had been—and wondering if tomorrow might bring another.
