Blue Locker Hallway Coffee

The last bell had just faded, and the blue lockers down the hall seemed to close in a little tighter. Kevin waited by his locker until he saw Jonathan’s yellow hoodie appear around the corner. He didn’t want to rush him; he wanted to say what happened in class without it dissolving into the noise of the afternoon. When Jonathan stopped with his backpack slung over one shoulder, Kevin stepped forward and gently took hold of one hand. His smile was soft but steady. 'I’m not asking you to be brave,' Kevin said. 'Just ten minutes with coffee before I let the day win.'

Jonathan looked down at Kevin’s palm—warm, calloused from guitar strings—and then up into his eyes. He hesitated a beat, as if weighing whether this was too visible, but then he let go of his backpack strap and nodded once. 'Ten minutes sounds like a good idea,' he said, and instead of stepping away, he moved closer. The hallway noise seemed to recede; the lockers became background instead of walls.

They walked toward the cafeteria with shoulders brushing lightly, laughter breaking out over something only they understood from class. By the time they reached the door, the air felt different—less like a place where people watched and more like a shared space where they could breathe. Kevin glanced back at Jonathan’s profile in the fluorescent light; Jonathan glanced back. Neither said anything about what might happen next, but both knew this hallway wouldn’t be their last.
