Beach Ring Maze

Jacob stood on the warm sand, colorful inflatable rings clutched in his hands. The sun poured light over the dunes and the gentle waves lapped at their feet. He glanced toward Samuel, who was drying off with a towel nearby, and felt that familiar hesitation: would this look childish? Would it break the quiet seriousness they'd been keeping between them lately? Still, he stepped forward and called out, "I'm not letting you win at everything. Come help me build a ring maze—loser buys ice cream." The tease hung in the salty air, light enough to laugh away.

Samuel smiled, dropped his towel to the sand, and replied, "Only if I get to choose the music and call all the shots when we trip." He stepped close, fingers brushing Jacob's arm before he squeezed his forearm with a warmth that felt like permission. Jacob felt something settle in him—quiet relief, a small heat of certainty. They sat on a folded towel nearby, laughing at how absurd it sounded to plan an obstacle course on the beach instead of just sunbathing. "Alright," Samuel said, eyes bright. "Let's build when the tide turns low." Jacob nodded. For once, he let himself believe they might actually do this.

They agreed to start as soon as the water receded, leaving the afternoon open: ice cream or no ice cream, music chosen or not, and a playful possibility hanging between them.
