Rain-Soaked Pitch Invitation

The rain had stopped, leaving the grass slick and dark under a low gray sky. Edward wiped his hands on his shorts and stepped toward Peter, who was still holding the goalpost as if it were an anchor. The air smelled of wet turf and ozone; distant stadium lights hummed like sleeping insects.

Edward hesitated for a heartbeat, then said softly, “I’d like to buy you coffee. Not as a teammate—just as someone who doesn’t want this conversation to end with a handshake.” Peter’s smile was small but real. He let go of the post and replied, “Only if you promise not to rush me. I’m all in for that,” then reached out and briefly squeezed Edward’s forearm.

They walked off the pitch together under the same gray sky, shoulders close enough that their coats brushed. The rest of the team had long since scattered; here, there was only the quiet space between them, open enough to keep going.
